Wall Street, USA: Merill Lynch & Lehman Brothers has sent the Dow Jones into a tailspin, what does this mean?

I’ve read the articles & seen the news clips regarding the demise of Lehman Brothers & Merill Lynch, does this mean in layman’s terms?

It is evident, this is not great news, considering the mortgage/foreclosure crises, the high cost of gasoline, Hurricane Gustav & Ike, the Midwest Floods, Credit Card debt, etc.

The state of this country is in shambles, to say the least!

Please explain to me in the simplest form(s) what the demise of these companies means to the welfare of the US economy!

Thank You Kindly.

Groundbreaking News FROM HEAVEN… A MUST READ!!!?

It appears that after some two thousand years, Jesus is reaccessing whether the investment he made in planet Earth was worth the trouble. In light of recent earthly events and the present state of the world, He has released the following statement.

“At the time my Father and I decided to do what we did, the whole saving the world bit, we were expecting at least a 50% turn around. Clearly, the human market has fallen well short of our expectations and, if we don’t begin to see a change in the numbers pretty soon, I’m afraid we may have to cut our losses.”

Jesus’s publicist was not immediately available to comment.

In other news, shares in the Antichrist Stock (AC) rose an unprecidented 70% points in just two hours.

How does the dow jones affect me, average joe?

I heard on the news today the stock market closed under 10,000 points. How does this affect me? I know people are worried, but I’m too dam poor right now and too far removed from the stock market to really give a crap. Why is this so bad? I know prices are going up and up and, the housing market is crashing and gas prices are going up. So….we are all screwed. But why should I be scared out of my wits like some of neighbors?

Why won’t Democrats take their share of the blame in this housing & financial market meltdown?

From a 1999 LA Times article:

“It’s one of the hidden success stories of the Clinton era. In the great housing boom of the 1990s…

Under Clinton, bank regulators have breathed the first real life into enforcement of the Community Reinvestment Act, a 20-year-old statute meant to combat “redlining” by requiring banks to serve their low-income communities…

In 1992, Congress mandated that Fannie and Freddie increase their purchases of mortgages for low-income and medium-income borrowers. Operating under that requirement… Fannie Mae has agreed to buy more loans with very low down payments–or with mortgage payments that represent an unusually high percentage of a buyer’s income. That’s made banks willing to lend to lower-income families they once might have rejected.

The top priority may be to ask more of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The two companies are now required to devote 42% of their portfolios to loans for low- and moderate-income borrowers; HUD, which has the authority to set the targets, is poised to propose an increase this summer. Although Fannie Mae actually has exceeded its target since 1994, it is resisting any hike. It argues that a higher target would only produce more loan defaults by pressuring banks to accept unsafe borrowers. HUD says Fannie Mae is resisting more low-income loans because they are less profitable.” [Hmmmm imagine that]

So, this is the result of a 1979 law passed by Jimmy Carter, a 1992 policy mandate by Clinton and Democrat controlled Congress and Senate. They forced Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to push loans on people who couldn’t afford them. When these corporations balked at the prospect, they were accused of being greedy. Now look where we are. Does this make anyone say hmmm?

Do you think Goldman Sachs has the ability to manipulate the market and if it does – what could that mean?

It seems like that do, by their own admission. What do you think? What could this mean?

“Sergey Aleynikov, an ex-Goldman Sachs computer programmer, was arrested July 3 after arriving at Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey, U.S. officials said. Aleynikov, 39, who has dual American and Russian citizenship, is charged in a criminal complaint with stealing the trading software. Teza Technologies LLC, a Chicago-based firm co-founded by a former Citadel Investment Group LLC trader, said it suspended Aleynikov, who started there on July 2.

At a court appearance July 4 in Manhattan, Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Facciponti told a federal judge that Aleynikov’s alleged theft poses a risk to U.S. markets. Aleynikov transferred the code, which is worth millions of dollars, to a computer server in Germany, and others may have had access to it, Facciponti said, adding that New York-based Goldman Sachs may be harmed if the software is disseminated.

“The bank has raised the possibility that there is a danger that somebody who knew how to use this program could use it to manipulate markets in unfair ways,” Facciponti said, according to a recording of the hearing made public today. “The copy in Germany is still out there, and we at this time do not know who else has access to it.”

‘Preposterous’

The prosecutor added, “Once it is out there, anybody will be able to use this, and their market share will be adversely affected.” ”

Dow Jones Index

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSE: DJI, also called the DJIA, Dow 30, INDP, or informally the Dow Jones or The Dow) is one of several stock market indices, created by nineteenth-century Wall Street Journal editor and Dow Jones & Company co-founder Charles Dow. It is an index that shows how certain stocks have traded. Dow compiled the index to gauge the performance of the industrial sector of the American stock market. It is the second-oldest U.S. market index, after the Dow Jones Transportation Average, which Dow also created. The average is computed from the stock prices of 30 of the largest and most widely held public companies in the United States. The "industrial" portion of the name is largely historical—many of the 30 modern components have little to do with traditional heavy industry. The average is price-weighted. To compensate for the effects of stock splits and other adjustments, it is currently a scaled average, not the actual average of the prices of its component stocks—the sum of the component prices is divided by a divisor, which changes whenever one of the component stocks has a stock split or stock dividend, to generate the value of the index. Since the divisor is currently less than one, the value of the index is higher than the sum of the component prices.
